Boiler are the best way to heat a home. Because of the high reliability, a great source of domestic hot water production through a indirect water heater and the capability to give your home the exact amount of heat based on outside temperature through an outdoor reset control. We believe that a high efficiency boiler with a indirect water heater and a outdoor reset control can save you as much as 45% on your fuel bills compared to a warm air furnace with a electric or gas water heater. You can save even more with proper zoning of rooms.
Things to notice when looking at boilers: 1: Water Content (less is better) 2:Efficiency (84% or higher) 3:Warranty (lifetime warranty on heat exchanger) 4: Cold start not tankless (means that the boiler does not have to maintain a high boiler temperature for making domestic hot water through a tankless coil).
If you have a oil fired boiler with a tankless coil (for hot water), your boiler must maintain a high boiler temperature to produce a minimal amount of hot water for domestic use such as showering and cleaning. Oil fired boilers with tankless coils are constructed of either cast iron or steal and contain between 12 and 40 gallons of water. That is allot of water to heat, even in the summer time. We suggest a Cold start boiler (does not need to maintain a high temperature), Low mass (low water content 4 - 7 gallons) and multi pass which means that the heat produced from the oil burner will pass through the heat exchanger (cast iron sections) multiple times. A tri-pass boiler will have about 7 feet of heat exchange verses a conventional pin type boiler which has about 18" of heat exchange. This results in a much lower exiting flue temp of about 350 degrees verses 500 or higher from a conventional boiler. That is a big difference. The cold start boiler we recommend is a Biasi boiler. Please click on this link and check it out. http://www.QHTinc.com This Boiler is a rugged work horse, Cheap, and has all the high performance as the extremely expensive brands. If there is another comparably priced oil fired tri-pass Low mass boiler out there, we are un aware of it. We cannot say enough good things about this boiler.
If you need the brand name, Burnham actually makes a Steel boiler with a lifetime warranty on its heat exchanger and is a low water content boiler (6.1 gallons) with a efficiency rating of 86.7 (based on a co2 level of 13.5% which is unrealistic expectation because a oil boiler will soot up after 12% co2. 11.5co2 is a good co2 level ((this is how the big manufactures trick you by posting a high efficiency level)) )This is a very good boiler and is much better then the Burnham V8 boiler and its counterpart Weil McClain's Gold series oil fired boiler. If your looking at a Gas boiler, we like the new Thermoflo GWS series boilers. The GWS is a high efficient, low water content (as low as 1.5 gallons), cast iron, lifetime warranty heat exchanger and is simple. We say simple because most high efficiency gas boilers have injection pumps and heat recovery units which both can be very troublesome. We recommend this boiler mostly because of its simplistic design,
For a 90% efficient gas boiler we like the Dunkirk Q 90. It has a aluminum block heat exchanger which is great for low water temperature systems. 2.6 gallon water content and a simple design with no injection pump. This boiler is about $2600.00 and is the cheapest out of all the ultra high boilers and has the best warranty of 15 years. The Munchkin from Super Stor only has a 12 year warranty. The Munchkin boiler is a great boiler with a stainless steel heat exchanger and is worth checking out at Http://www.Htproducts.com . The Peerless pinnacle boiler has the same specs and is also worth checking out at http://www.peerlessboilers.com . But we still like the Dunkirk's design and warranty better. Check out the Dunkirk Q-90 boiler at http://Dunkirk.com .
Don't forget about the outdoor reset control or indirect water heater.
